I chose Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin and implemented it at the Royal Opera House. I chose Lohengrin as the design theme not only because its story revolves around the Knight of the Holy Grail, which is rich in symbolic meaning and dramatic tension, but also because the exploration of morality, faith and humanity contained in this opera deeply attracted me. Through the design of this project, I hope to show the profound connotation of this work on the stage and enhance the audience's emotional experience through visual effects.
During the design process, I mainly focused on the two symbolic scenes of heaven and hell, and reflected the conflict and tension of the story through the strong contrast of visual effects. I drew inspiration from the ceiling murals of European churches, which show heaven and hell in religious stories with grand and shocking visual effects. I incorporated this style into the stage design and combined it with my experience in lighting backlighting design to create a stage effect that is both traditional and innovative. Through large-scale lighting and scenery, I hope to truly restore the purity and holiness of heaven and the darkness and horror of hell.
